Beating the peak: shoulder-season sweet spots

The weeks just before and after high season give you the good weather without the crowds or the top prices. Here's where to catch them.

Beating the peak: shoulder-season sweet spots

The best-value travel trick is the simplest one: go in the shoulder season — the weeks bracketing peak season. You keep most of the good weather but lose the crowds and the top-of-the-market prices.

What “shoulder season” buys you

  • Rates 20–40% below peak on the same hotels
  • Availability at places that are booked out in high season
  • Sights and beaches that actually feel relaxed

The difference between mid-December and mid-November in the Maldives can be a third off the villa — for almost identical weather.

Where to catch it

  • Maldives / Sri Lanka: early November or April
  • Thailand / Vietnam: late October, or April before the rains
  • Dubai: March and early November, either side of the winter peak
  • Europe: May and late September — warm, but past the summer rush

The one trade-off

Shoulder season occasionally means a bit more weather risk — an early shower, a cooler evening. In our experience it’s a trade most travellers happily make for the savings and the space.

Give us a rough window rather than exact dates and we’ll find the cheapest good week inside it.
